I’ve been more inspired to take photos again but its been difficult to lock in my motivation. I felt like I did the film thing and I got a lot out of it, but as someone who isn’t pursuing photography professionally I wanted something less tedious. I didn’t want to spend my time and money developing and scanning just to decide what I needed to do differently with the next $25 dollars [film + devo + scan]. Digital always turned me off since it was almost sharper than reality, like a commercial. I like film because it romanticizes your life, it makes you believe that that beautiful photo with the warm colors and textures of film is actually how that moment was. I’d like to believe that…
Here are some photos I took on my film camera trying to capture my neighborhood
I ended up purchasing a cute Sony Cybershot in Red because it was compact and had a Zeiss lens. But more importantly I wanted it for its design. It was these photos I found on explorecams.com that led to my decision.
When it arrived, it was a lot smaller than expected. I could fit it in the palm of my tiny hand. That was naturally uncomfortable as my phone was much larger. It made me realize that we’ve become used to the size of the large smart phones and that anything smaller was much more delicate.

Sometimes the photos turned out the way I wanted them; sharp, stylized, and in focus, but this wasn’t consistent. It kinda ended up seeming like a regular early 2000’s digicam without anything too unique. This made me more aware of the standard I was looking for and how sometimes casual photos of everyday things can look beautiful by the camera quality or editing, but then again who wants to edit their photos? Although a bit defeated I still brought it around with me everywhere as a form of discipline, and also because it was sort of a beautiful camera…
